Are you ready for an EPIC SUP Camp adventure? This is one for the bucket list!

Join She SUPs in sunny Queensland as we embark on an epic SUP expedition to South Stradbroke Island. If you’ve been paddling regularly for a while now, and you’re ready for your next paddling challenge - this is for you!

Our South Stradbroke Island SUP Expedition has been running twice a year since 2022, and you’ll soon see why we just can’t get enough of it!

This trip has been designed for paddlers who have been paddling for a while and are looking for their first overnight SUP camp. Camping experience is not required (but great if you have it) - this is often many paddler’s first (ever) camp, or perhaps the first in many years!!

Logistically this adventure is quite complex, but the best news is, you don’t have to worry about that! You will be supported by 3 SUP instructors who will lead all the logistical planning, weather forecasting, route plans etc throughout the trip, and we will have a small which will carry all of our gear, so all you need on your SUP is a small dry bag for snacks and sunscreen!

Our goal is to help you achieve this amazing accomplishment of a multi-day SUP expedition (for most paddlers this is their first ever SUP expedition), disconnect from the stresses of home and work life, and have an amazing memorable weekend with new SUP friends.

STYLE/VIBE OF THE TRIP:

“I’m up for a true adventure”
”I want to get into expedition paddling/ touring”
”I seek wild experiences”
“I’m ready to take on an amazing SUP challenge with new friends”

SUP ABILITY LEVEL
(She SUPs trips range from Level 0-4 in SUP ability):

Level 3: Intermediate Paddlers - You should understand how to utilise hinging to increase the power in your stroke (if you’re not sure what this means, get in touch!) and have the stamina to paddle 10km. Upon booking into these trips we will include some training advice in your Trip Notes so that you can ensure you feel comfortable attending the trip. As always, you’re welcome to switch between standing, kneeling and sitting on these trips, however due to the distances we need to cover on this trip, we recommend standing for the majority of the paddle to get maximum power and glide from each stroke (we will have water/rest breaks every hour). Prior to this trip you should have experienced paddling 3 hours in one go, however on this trip we will likely paddle in stints of 1.5 hours.

FITNESS LEVEL
(She SUPs trips range from Level 0-4 in Fitness Level):

Level 2: A moderate level of fitness is required to enjoy this highly active trip. We will have two very long paddle days, we’ll explore the island by foot and by SUP and as this is an expedition style trip, there will be plenty to do around camp!

TRIP DATES

REVIEW:

“Wow! What an epic adventure I had on the Stradbroke Island trip. I would do it again tomorrow if I could. Extremely well organised and run - everything taken into consideration to allow me as a guest to focus on paddling and enjoying myself. I was given a list of things I needed in advance so I could pack appropriately. We were camping in such an idyllic spot where you could see and hear so much nature including waking up to the sound of the waves. I was truly able to switch off from life, spend the weekend with like minded women, paddling, laughing and enjoying good conversation. If you're thinking about signing up to a She SUPs trip just do it! I promise you won't regret it, and like me, you'll probably get the bug and want to do them all!”

SUP + CAMP GEAR HIRE

SUP hire can be arranged for those who need it but is limited so is provided on a first come, first served basis. If you are flying to the Gold Coast and have an inflatable board, we recommend bringing your own iSUP as checked in luggage (we can advise further on this upon booking).

To ensure an enjoyable SUP adventure, we do not recommend bringing inflatable boards that are smaller than 10ft. If you’re unsure, please get in touch (hello@shesups.com.au).

All paddlers will need their own sleeping bag, small roll-mat, inflatable camp pillow, and camp plate, cup and knife and fork. If you do not have an item, please let us know upon booking and we can try to help source it for you (it may be that someone in our community has an item that you can borrow, or you can hire from a local camping hire company).

Tents can be hired or you can BYO. In hired tents you may be sharing with one other person but we use large 3-4 person tents so you’ll have plenty of space.

Where we are staying

We are staying at a beautiful boat-access only campsite. Completely surrounded by native bushland, we’ve secured a great corner of the campsite which will allow us to have direct beach access at all times. While we are camping in a remote spot, we can confirm that amenities include great toilets and hot showers, and we are within a short walk to the Licensed Café and Kiosk, which have basic groceries and camping supplies including ice and firewood… and cocktails!

What happens in case of bad weather?

This is a SUP “Expedition”, which means embracing the adventure and being ready to adapt to whatever the conditions bring. Every trip is different, and that's part of what makes expedition paddling so rewarding. On previous adventures we've paddled through a passing rain shower, paused on shore to watch a storm roll by, and adjusted our route to work with changing winds. These moments are all part of the experience, and often become the stories everyone talks about afterwards.

The good news? You don't need to worry about reading forecasts, planning routes, or making weather calls. Your instructor team will take care of all of that, using their experience and local knowledge to make decisions that prioritise both safety and the best possible experience each day. We want you to end each day feeling accomplished and happy, we will never force you into a situation that will leave you miserable!

While we're also hoping for beautiful spring conditions for this expedition, we always have contingency plans should Mother Nature throw us something more extreme. In the unlikely event that the forecast includes severe weather, such as tropical systems, gale-force winds, or flooding, we may relocate paddling sessions to more sheltered areas around the Gold Coast or South Stradbroke area.

If conditions made it unsafe to paddle to camp, we would travel to South Stradbroke Island by ferry instead (additional ferry fares apply: approximately $25 per person, each way) and provide additional shelter options if required. We'd still enjoy an incredible weekend of camping, exploring, and making the most of everything the island has to offer.

The reassuring part? We've never had to use this contingency plan. Thanks to careful trip planning around tides, winds, and local conditions, every previous expedition has successfully paddled to camp. The backup plan exists simply to ensure we can deliver a safe and enjoyable adventure, whatever the weather decides to do.
