SUP Guides For The Waterways Of Sydney

SUP Location Guides are herrrre!!

When I first started She SUPs, one of the things I heard from many female paddlers was that they didn’t know where to paddle when going paddling by themselves or with friends. Yes there are of course hundreds of waterways, but they all shared questions such as:

  • Where is safe?

  • Where is an easy launch spot?

  • Am I allowed to be there?

  • Are there toilets?

  • Is it ok for beginners?

  • I want to avoid waves - are there any waves?

As a regular paddler (and explorer) of Sydney’s waterways, I have always been more than happy to share a recommendation. However, in September 2019 I went one step further.

As many of you know, in September (or as I called it, ‘SUPtember’) I paddled the ‘She SUPs Sydney’ expedition, where I paddled 30 waterways of Sydney in 30 days and shared my journey via social media.

The goal of the expedition was to inspire, raise awareness of She SUPs and our mission to get more women out on the water, and to demonstrate the incredible waterways we have right on our doorstep.

What you didn't get to see on social media were the 4 months of meticulous planning that went into the expedition. Hours were spent documenting 40-50 potential paddle routes, exploring their launch locations, establishing evacuation plans, documenting facilities (e.g. toilet, water taps) and working out wind directions and currents. All of this (and more!) was then documented in a ginormous spreadsheet that informed and guided the expedition.

And so… what do I do during a pandemic when I can’t run She SUPs paddles? I return to my spreadsheet and the journal that I kept during that month, and I start to write…

The SUP Location Guide series is a more 'reader-friendly' write-up of that mega-spreadsheet built upon with stories of my experiences to inspire and enable you to set off on your own SUP adventures.

These SUP Location Guides are written by a female paddler FOR female paddlers, aiming to answer all of your common questions regarding safety, facilities, launch locations and more.
